Varun made his List A debut for Tamil Nadu in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy during September 2018. He was the leading wicket-taker for Tamil Nadu in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy by picking up 22 wickets in nine matches.
After performing consistently back to back matches in TNPL, he got noticed by many IPL franchises. He had a base price of 20 lakhs and went onto become the top paid cricketer in the auction day along with Jaydev Unadkat by fetching a massive 8.4 Crore.

Varun Chakravarthy Started his cricketing journey at the age of 13 by playing tennis ball cricket. He did his graduation of Architecture at SRM University, Chennai. After completing the graduation, he was only focused on his work and thus by paused his cricket training for a couple of years.
Later he quit his job and restarted his cricket again by playing at club level. During the time he developed almost seven types of variations.
Varun was a net bowler for Chennai Super Kings for four days for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2018. Later, he was called by Tamilnadu cricketer and Kolkata Knight Rider skipper Dinesh Karthik to bowl for their franchise in the nets in IPL 2018. “When I was with KKR for two weeks, Sunil Narine’s coach Carl Crowe gave me insights.” Said the new millionaire Varun.
